ANDY WILKINSON

One of Andy Wilkinson's corrugated iron dancing hares, rimed with frost

SCULPTOR & DESIGNER

Andy is inspired by landscape and form, often focussing on the overlooked smaller details. He has fond memories of a Pop Art exhibition he went to as a young boy and was enthralled. The combination of creating objects out of unrelated materials, the application of commercial and industrial processes, the sense of fun and irreverence all combine to represent the world in an abstract and provocative way – it's just brilliant! Claes Oldenburg and Roy Lichtenstein are two of his favourite artists on whom he models his Pop Art revivalist visions. Andy uses his craft skills to turn his creative ideas – viewed with a designers perspective – into the sculptures you see here.

Andy trained as graphic designer at Exeter College of Art & Design and worked in marketing and corporation communications. He was a partner in a Hertfordshire design agency for 20 years before taking early retirement. Now he can concentrate on creating for his own pleasure and yours.

Reimagining materials with a sideways look at shape and form are what excite him – driftwood, metal and corrugated iron all spark ideas that can be transform by hand crafting them into objects of beauty. It's all part of a process of exploration, allowing the possibilities of different materials to free up the imagination, creating artworks that connect with people. It's what Andy's been doing since he could hold a pencil.

Making a connection and evoking a response, triggering emotions such as delight and intrigue are what he tries to achieve. There is often an element of ambiguity and fun within his creations which he hopes will intrigue and question, transporting the viewer back to fond memories or create new ones.
